That is why it is so disappointing to see that Disney hasn't bothered to clean up the video for the Special Edition release. Fans of Castle in the Sky may claim that the animation is what makes this straightforward story stand toe to toe with many of his other films. With wondrous artwork that can only be achieved with the traditional 2D style of animation, his films always innovate in the realm of making imagined fantasy real. Score: 7 out of 10 Video and Presentation One of the most important parts of any Miyazaki film is the video. No, Miyazaki doesn't make bad movies, and if Castle in the Sky's protagonists gave us more reason to care about them, this would be a great film. Laputa's intricate design guarantees that it would be a wonder to behold no matter how it's animated. animation often works as artifice and bedazzlement with its own technological achievement, but Ghibli's movies convey an earnest joy with the scenes themselves. It's a testament to Miyazaki's unfailing visual sensibility that Castle in the Sky overcomes cardboard characters and a predictable plot to remain worth watching throughout its 125-minute running time. Other supporting characters, such as Pazu's muscle-flexing boss, are amusing but hardly memorable. Her personality moves in the opposite direction from Muska's, starting out as a growling, gun-toting witch and gradually morphing into a human being. It's not difficult to imagine him answering the question, "What are we going to do tonight, Muska?" with "What we try to do every night: Try to take over the world!" Only Mama comes off as the kind of multifaceted character expected by Miyazaki fans.
He devolves over the course of the film from a potentially interesting villain to a cackling megalomaniac reminiscent of antagonists from bottom-of-the-barrel Bond movies. Worst of all is the biggest bad guy, Muska.
Castle in the Sky falls back on stock characters, including the plucky young lad and the innocent girl who just wants to get away from the bad guys. Miyazaki normally creates the most complex protagonists in the animation industry, U.S., Japanese or otherwise, but his touch disappears here. So are the characters, and that's unfortunate. The plot is the most straightforward of all Miyazaki's films. Everyone wants the crystal because it supposedly holds the key to great power - the legendary floating city of Laputa, the "Castle in the Sky" that lends the film its title. Mama's gang comes into town the next day chasing after the girl, and eventually the fleeing Pazu and Sheeta end up in the arms of the military and secret agent Muska ( Mark Hamill), who had originally brought Sheeta onto the zeppelin to begin with. She drifts straight into the outstretched arms of young Pazu ( James Van Der Beek), who was drawn to the mysterious light. Instead of ending up as a smear thousands of feet below, the girl gently floats to the ground unconsciously after the crystal starts glowing. In the ensuing gunfight, Sheeta climbs out a window, loses her grip and plummets. Things open with a bang, when Mama Dola (English voice by Cloris Leachman) and her air pirates attack a zeppelin carrying Sheeta ( Anna Paquin), a girl who wears a mysterious crystal around her neck.
Quality aside though, American viewers may even find Castle in the Sky to be Miyazaki's most accessible work because of all his Studio Ghibli movies, it most closely follows a tried-and-true formula: Boy meets girl. Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky is proof that he is incapable of making bad movies.
